Ocean solutions without emission reduction solutions are equivalent to blue washing.

This was highlighted by the Minister responsible for Climate Change, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, during the Blue Pacific Ocean high-level event at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sayed-Khaiyum asserts that protecting the ocean from the adverse effects of climate change is essential for the survival of coastal communities and the marine ecosystem.

“Nothing replaces reducing emissions. That is why it is extremely important that we maintain 1.5 degrees of life in Glasgow. There will be no reef to manage in our region after 2 degrees of warming.

The minister adds that there is also no excuse for the gaps in the commitment of climate finance necessary to protect vulnerable nations.

“All Pacific island nations grapple with the impact of climate change, but none are as acute as our brothers and sisters in the smallest and lowest island nations. We must continue to unite to face the threat and find practical solutions. “

Fiji has pledged to reduce emissions from domestic shipping by 40% by 2030 through the enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution submitted late last year.
